MEPS HC-020: MEPS 1997 Full Year Consolidated Data File

Update #3: 12/12/07

The variable FOODCT97 on the HC-020 data file should not be used because it is based on an invalid question in the survey instrument. This question asks "About how much did the family pay each month for food stamps?" when in fact, as of 1979, the food stamp program no longer maintained a purchase requirement. All responses are considered invalid.

Update #2: 04/24/02

The HC-020 codebook file and SAS user file have been updated to correct an error in the format for the variable INSCOV97. This error and correction did not affect the data, so there has been no change to the data file. The correct format for this variable is as follows:

1 ANY PRIVATE

2 PUBLIC ONLY

3 UNINSURED

Update #1: 06/06/01

Because of inconsistency in the variables identifying the number of pregnancies and births reported in 1997, these variables were not included on this file. Analysts should use RSNINHOS, which was included on HC-016D (Hospital Stays File), to identify the number of deliveries and/or births for 1997.
