Title:
Health Insurance Status of Young Adults, Ages 22-26, 2008
Product type:
   Statistical Brief 305
MEPS component:
   Household Component
Publication date:
   December 9, 2010
Description:
Estimates of the health insurance status of the U.S. civilian noninstitutionalized population are critical to policymakers and others concerned with access to medical care and the cost and quality of that care. Health insurance helps people get timely access to medical care and protects them against the risk of expensive and unanticipated medical events. Young adults are less likely to be covered by health insurance than their older counterparts. Effective September 2010, one component of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act permits adult dependents to remain on their parents' insurance plans until their 26th birthday. This coverage provision also applies to adult dependents under age 26 who no longer live with their parents, are not dependents on their parents' tax returns, or are no longer students.
