a Estimates are provided for 25 states and are listed in order of state population size. Reliable estimates can not be produced for the other states due to insufficient sample in those states.

b The source of payment does not include other public programs such as Department of Veterans Affairs (except TRICARE); other Federal sources (Indian Health Service, military treatment facilities, and other care provided by the Federal Government); other State and local sources (community and neighborhood clinics, State and local health departments, and State programs other than Medicaid); and other public (Medicaid payments reported for persons who were not enrolled in the Medicaid program at any time during the year). The source of payment also does not include Workers Compensation; other unclassified sources (e.g., automobile, homeowners, liability, and other miscellaneous or unknown sources); and other private insurance (any type of private insurance payments reported for persons without private health insurance coverage during the year, as defined in MEPS).

c "Population" and "Percent with an expense" columns are based on "All persons". "Mean per person with an expense" and "Percent distribution of total expenses by source payments" columns are based on "Persons with an expense".

d Private insurance include TRICARE (Armed-Forces related coverage).

e The precision of an estimated standard error depends on the degrees of freedom available for estimating the standard error. In constructing a confidence interval for a state-level estimate, the corresponding degrees of freedom should be used in obtaining the critical value from the Student’s t-distribution.
