Readme File for H63 Data
Below are technical specifications and programming information for the H63 data file. Users are strongly encouraged to read the documentation file provided in this release for additional information on the content of this file. H63DAT: This file contains the H63 data in ASCII format. It contains 67,028 records with 87 variables. This file has a logical record length of 254 with an additional 2-byte carriage return/line feed at the end of each record. The content of this file is described in the file H63DOC.PDF.
H63SSP: This file contains the H63 data in SAS Transport format. See the H63SU.TXT file for information applicable to SAS users of the H63 data.
Note: For users' convenience, both of these data files (i.e., the ASCII data files and the SAS Transport data files) are provided in two compressed formats: 1) a compressed ZIP file and 2) a self-extracting executable file. See Notes on Viewing and Downloading Files for information on uncompressing
these files.
H63SU.TXT: This ASCII file contains information for SAS users of the H63 data. This includes information on the SAS Transport version of the H63 data, H63.SSP, as well as SAS statements for converting the ASCII data file H63.DAT into a SAS data set (in lieu of using the SAS Transport file) and for creating and using SAS formats. This file also includes helpful information for inexperienced SAS users, such as sample SAS program code.
H63SPU.TXT: This ASCII file contains information for SPSS users of the H63 data, including statements for use in converting the ASCII data file into a SPSS data set.
H63DOC.PDF: This PDF (Portable Document Format) file contains the document describing the contents of the H63.DAT file.
H63CB.PDF: This PDF file contains the codebook for the for the H63 data file. It indicates the record layout (i.e., the start and end position of each variable) of the file. The codebook also includes listings of the variables in both alphabetical and position order, as well as the following information for each variable: 8 character name, 40 character description, format (length), type (character or numeric), start and end position, and unweighted frequencies.
This release also includes crosswalk files showing how the detailed 2003 Census industry and occupation codes were collapsed into the condensed codes on the file (H63IND1.PDF and H63OCC1.PDF). The same type of crosswalk is included for the pre-2002 file condensed codes, collapsed from the 1990 Census categories (H63IND2.PDF and H63OCC2.PDF). See the H63DOC file for additional information on these crosswalks.
