Using data from the 2021-2023 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, this Statistical Brief found that the percentage of visits to medical offices or hospital outpatient departments that take place via telehealth is lower for patients living in nonmetropolitan compared to metropolitan areas for both visits to mental health providers (26.3 compared to 48.9 percent) and other providers (2.6 compared to 3.8 percent). Among visits to mental health providers, the percentage taking place via telehealth was lower in nonmetropolitan compared to metropolitan areas for adults experiencing all degrees of psychological distress. |
