Most adults age 65 and over are covered by Medicare. Traditional Medicare did not cover prescription drugs until 2006 when Medicare Part D was phased in. Average out-of-pocket costs per purchase decreased from 2005 to 2006 for adults age 65 and over for three of the top five most expensive prescription drugs for persons 65 and over in 2005 (Lipitor, Plavix, and Nexium). For adults ages 45-64 with any private insurance, average out-of-pocket costs per purchase decreased from 2005 to 2006 for two of the top five prescriptions for adults age 65 and over in 2005 (Lipitor and Zocor). |
