MEPS HC-010D: 1996 Hospital Inpatient Stays File
Release date: Spring 2000

Notes on viewing and downloading files
Printing tips
This public use file is one in a series of event-level public use files from the 1996 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) Household Component (HC) and the Medical Provider Component (MPC). Released as an ASCII data file with SAS, SPSS, and STATA programming statements and as a SAS transport file, the Hospital Inpatient Stays File provides detailed information on 1996 household-reported hospital inpatient stays collected in Panel 1, Rounds 1, 2, and 3 of the survey. Data are gathered from a nationally representative sample of the civilian, noninstitutionalized population of the United States and can be used to make estimates of the utilization and expenditures associated with hospital inpatient stays in 1996.

The Hospital Inpatient Stays Public Use Data File consists of 2 event-level data files. File 1 contains characteristics associated with the hospital inpatient stay event such as: the date of the hospital inpatient stay, reason for the stay, types of services received, condition(s) and procedure(s) associated with the hospital inpatient stay, and whether or not medicines were prescribed; and imputed expenditure data. File 2 contains pre-imputed and unimputed expenditure data.

For more information, see MEPS HC-014: 1996 MEPS HC Survey Data.

SPSS and STATA Programming Statements have been added.

The data user/analyst should note that the variable SURGPROC on the 1996 to 1999 Hospital Inpatient Stays event files is a different variable from the one with the same name on the 1996 to 1999 Emergency Room Visits, Office-Based Medical Provider Visits, and Outpatient Visits event files. This is indicated by the different labels and formatted values for these variables, which are as follows.

On the Hospital Inpatient Stays file:

SURGPROC has label = MAIN SURGICAL PROCEDURE, and these formatted values:

Update #1: 08/01/00

An updated version of File 1 of the HC-010D file was released on 8/1/00. This file is identical to the previous version with the exception of the condition variables (NUMCOND, evICDiX, evPROiX and evCCCiX), which were modified for a subset of records. At the present time users can obtain the correct set of linked condition variables for this file by using the updated condition-event link file provided as File 1 of the Appendix File, HC-010I, with the condition file, HC-006. See the HC-010I documentation for information on linking event files to the condition file.
