This data file contains data obtained in Rounds 1, 2, and 3, for a sample of 5,899 persons; one record per person. The variables pertain to basic demographics, prior use of long-term care, family relationships, income and asset data including home ownership, key residence history data (e.g., dates of NH admission, date of death, etc.), characteristics about the nursing home resident's spouse, and sampling and variance estimation variables. These data items correspond with questions from the Facility Background and Insurance Questionnaire and the background section of the Community Questionnaire (the BQ questions), and the income and assets questions from the Community Questionnaire and the Expenditure Questionnaire (the IA questions). Most of the data items provided on this file have been edited and imputed. The following statistics were derived from these data: Of the 3,097,000 persons that used a nursing home any time during the 1996, half were residents in the nursing home on January 1, and half were admitted to the nursing home during the year (1,560,000 and 1,537,000, respectively). With regards to poverty level status there were 723,000 persons with an income below poverty. In addition, there were 1,296,000 persons with an income of at least poverty but less than 200% of poverty. 734,000 persons had an income of 200% of poverty but less than 400% of the poverty level. Lastly, 343,000 persons had an income 400% or greater than the poverty level. The majority of persons did not own a home. Of the total nursing home population 2,012,000 persons did not own a home while 995,000 did. Data are included on persons sampled as January 1, 1996 residents and those sampled as a 1996 admission to the sampled nursing home. Together these samples represent all persons who used a nursing home any time during 1996.
