This chartbook presents data from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) on spending in 1996 for medical services and supplies for the civilian noninstitutionalized (community) population. The report is organized into four sections. Section 1 shows national expenses by amount, type of service, and source of payment. Sections 2-4 illustrate variation in different aspects of health care spending by selected population characteristics (age, race/ethnicity, income, insurance status, and health status). Section 2 shows per capita expenses, Section 3 shows the distribution of expenses by type of service, and Section 4 shows out-of-pocket expenses. |
