This public use release is one in a series of public use event files drawn from the 1996 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) Household (HC) and Medical Provider Components (MPC). This release contains 2 data files each of which is provided as an ASCII file with SAS, SPSS, and STATA programming statements and as a SAS transport file. File 1 is used for linking the MEPS condition file with the MEPS event files; File 2 is used for linking the MEPS prescribed medicines event file with other event files.
This release also includes two tables provided as PDF files: Table 1, the "MEPS 1996 Condition-Event Frequency" table contains unweighted and weighted counts of records on the MEPS 1996 event files for each of the condition, procedure and clinical classification codes on the MEPS 1996 condition file; Table 2, the "MEPS 1996 Utilization and Expenditures Summary" table contains statistics for all of the utilization and expenditure variables contained on the MEPS 1996 person-level and event-level files.
SPSS and STATA Programming Statements have been added.
Update #1: 07/21/00
An updated version of File 1 of HC-010I file was released on 7/21/00. The updated file contains 68 fewer records (n=198,362), with the number of deleted records distributed as follows by the variable EVENTYPE: MVIS=54, OPAT=(no change), EROM=2, STAZ=3, DVIS=(no change), HVIS=1, PMED=8. The HC-010I README file (READ10I.TXT), documentation file (HC10IDOC.PDF), and Table 1 file (HC10IT1.PDF), were also updated at that time, to reflect this change to File 1.
