Nursing Home Component data files are not available for public use, but researchers with approved projects can access the files at the AHRQ Data Center.
This file contains characteristics on approximately 1,300 nursing homes. There is one record per facility. These data were collected on Rounds 1-3 from sampled facilities and new facilities (i.e., nursing homes that sampled persons transferred to during 1996). This file consists of variables pertaining to characteristics of the facilities including information on the facility's structure (e.g., part of a retirement center or hospital); number of beds by licensing and certification categories; ownership and chain affiliation; number of residents; special care units by type, size and residents; staffing (at two points in time); services routinely provided by trained providers to residents, non-residents on-site and non-residents off-site; physician practice information; whether the facility vaccinated residents for pneumonia and influenza. These data items correspond with questions from the Round 1 Sampled Facility Questionnaire, the Round 2 Sampled Facility Questionnaire, the Round 3 Sampled Facility Questionnaire, the Round 2 New Facility Questionnaire, and the Round 3 New Facility Questionnaire. Most of the Round 1 data items provided on this file have been edited, or edited and imputed.
Person-level files from the MEPS NHC can be linked to this facility-level file in order to make person-specific estimates while controlling for facility-level characteristics; however, it is not possible to make facility-level estimates while controlling for person characteristics (facility case mix) given the sample design for MEPS NHC.
